The Spanish-Language Brand Vacuum
In 20 U.S. markets we measured what Spanish speakers type into Google when they need an injury lawyer — and which firm names they ask for. The demand runs a clean gradient down the Texas border. The brands, with two exceptions, do not exist.
What we measured
Note on this revision: the English comparator was expanded from 18 terms to 42 on 8 August 2026 — completing every lawyer/attorney pair and adding categories that were missing entirely, including “injury lawyer near me” and medical malpractice. That enlarged the denominator and lowered every Spanish share figure against our first draft (Laredo 15.8% → 11.0%, El Paso 13.8% → 9.7%). The ranking is unchanged: the border gradient is a ratio applied identically in every market, so correcting the denominator moved the levels, not the shape.
The Spanish layer is a 12-term basket of non-branded injury searches — “abogado de accidente,” “abogado de accidente de carro,” “abogado de lesiones personales” and kin — pulled from Google Ads search volume at metro scope with the language set to Spanish, queried unaccented the way people actually type. Google groups close variants and reports them at identical volume (the singular/plural pair returns the same number in every one of the 20 markets), so variants are collapsed max-within-cluster — the same de-duplication rule the brand ledger uses. The English comparator is the same 17-term generic demand layer used across this site. Spanish share = Spanish ÷ (Spanish + English) of measured generic demand. All figures are Google Keyword Planner bands, snapshot August 2026. Per-term data for every market is retained and available on request.
The border gradient
Sorted by Spanish share of measured demand, the table is a map. The top four are the Texas border and Gulf corridor — Laredo, El Paso, Corpus Christi, San Antonio — in exact geographic order. Everything else in America clusters between roughly 1% and 6%.
| Market | Spanish/mo | English/mo | Spanish share | Top Spanish CPC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laredo, TX | 90 | 730 | 11.0% | $331 |
| El Paso, TX | 220 | 2,050 | 9.7% | $1,316 |
| Corpus Christi, TX | 90 | 1,310 | 6.4% | — |
| San Antonio, TX | 580 | 10,930 | 5.0% | $535 |
| Tucson, AZ | 100 | 2,430 | 4.0% | $696 |
| Albuquerque, NM | 100 | 2,960 | 3.3% | $303 |
| Fresno, CA | 130 | 4,190 | 3.0% | $566 |
| Miami, FL | 300 | 9,920 | 2.9% | $359 |
| Houston, TX | 730 | 25,140 | 2.8% | $527 |
| Sacramento, CA | 160 | 5,600 | 2.8% | $729 |

| Dallas, TX | 320 | 14,070 | 2.2% | $1,447 |

| Orlando, FL | 130 | 9,870 | 1.3% | $448 |
| Chicago, IL | 200 | 16,500 | 1.2% | $276 |
| Las Vegas, NV | 190 | 16,400 | 1.1% | $192 |
| New York, NY | 560 | 56,120 | 1.0% | $494 |
Spanish/mo is the de-duplicated 12-term basket. English/mo is the sitewide generic layer. Top CPC is the highest Google Ads top-of-page bid observed on any Spanish term in the market.
The price of renting what nobody owns
The counter-intuitive finding is in the last column. Spanish injury clicks are not cheap inventory — they are some of the most expensive clicks in the study. “Abogado de accidente” tops out at $1,466 in Bakersfield. Dallas reaches $1,447 on Spanish truck-accident terms, El Paso $1,316, Los Angeles $1,250. Advertisers are paying English-tier prices and above for Spanish intent, which means the market has already concluded this demand converts. What no one has done is build the brand that would capture it for free. Every month, the same firms re-rent the same demand at auction.
One brand beats the whole category
The clearest evidence that brand replaces search in this segment is Los Defensores. In Los Angeles, searches for their name alone run 740 per month — more than the city’s entire Spanish generic accident basket combined (600 per month). A television brand built over decades now outweighs the whole category it sits in, and competitors bid $215–294 per click on the name itself — the surest sign in paid search that a territory is owned. Houston shows the same pattern in miniature: Abogado Javier Marcos, another broadcast-first brand, draws 170 branded searches a month. And that is very nearly the end of the list. Of 659 firms in this index, four carry Spanish-language brand terms, three register measurable volume, and two account for 97% of it. Demand in twenty markets; brands in two.
What search cannot see
These numbers understate the vacuum, and the study is stronger for saying so plainly. Laredo is roughly 95% Hispanic; its measured Spanish share is 11.0%. The gap is not missing demand — it is demand that search cannot see. Bilingual searchers type English keywords. Spanish-dominant consumers, more than any other segment of this market, reach lawyers through television, radio, and referral — which is exactly why the two brands that do exist here are broadcast brands first and search brands second. The measured search gap is the visible edge of a larger vacuum.
What is not measured yet
McAllen–Brownsville — by share of Spanish-speaking households, arguably the most Spanish-language media market in America — is not yet among the 205 markets this index measures. Neither is the Rio Grande Valley’s firm roster. Both are queued for the next edition, and if the border gradient holds, the Valley should sit above Laredo at the top of this table.
Method & disclosure
Search volumes are Google Ads Keyword Planner bands at metro scope, fetched August 2026 with Spanish language targeting; close variants de-duplicated max-within-cluster; the English comparator is the standing generic layer described on the methodology page, which also carries this site’s funding and ownership disclosure. Branded Spanish capture figures come from the live BrandTerritory ledger. Keyword Planner bands are estimates, not counts; treat single-market differences under 30 searches per month as noise.
