What we measured

Between August 4–5, 2026, Mass Tort Ad Agency measured the homepage of every personal injury law firm in the BrandTerritory index that operates a working website — 627 firms across 205 U.S. markets — using the public engine at seo.mtaa.ai under one published weighting: GEO 35%, content 25%, technical 20%, schema 15%, on-page 5%. The same engine, weights, and method used in our August 2026 audit of 18 legal SEO agencies.

Not one of 627 personal injury law firms earned an A for AI-readiness in August 2026. The average firm scores 89.8 on technical SEO and 57.1 on GEO — a 32.7-point gap that holds on 620 of 627 firms.

Every dot is a firm. Below the diagonal = optimized for the search engine being replaced, not the one replacing it. n = 627, measured August 4–5, 2026.

The failure is trust, not plumbing

Every high-severity finding was classified into a fixed ten-theme taxonomy, with passing and unmeasurable checks excluded and results spot-verified against live pages. Two failures are near-universal: 98% of firms make claims a machine cannot verify — superlatives and verdict figures with no case, court, date, or source — and 74% publish legal content with no named, credentialed attorney attached. An answer engine that cannot verify a claim will not repeat it, so the firm's chosen differentiator is precisely what gets dropped from every AI answer.

Failure taxonomy across 627 firms: unverifiable claims 98%, broken schema 92%, no attorney credentials 74%, on-page basics 71%, thin content 48%, not extractable 42%, unreadable by plain crawlers 18%, no Q&A structure 18%, blocks AI crawlers 3.7%.
High/critical failures only · model-classified taxonomy · spot-verified against live sites.
Only 23 of 627 firms (3.7%) block AI crawlers in robots.txt. The popular explanation for AI invisibility is wrong — the machines can get in. There is simply little on the page they can trust, quote, or attribute.
Mean category scores across 627 firms: technical SEO 89.8, schema 79.9, on-page 78.9, content 64.2, GEO 57.1.
Mean category score, n = 627. The industry built flawless websites for the search engine that ranks pages, not the one that answers questions.

How the study checked itself

A 1-in-4 systematic sample (158 firms, measured twice each; pass-to-pass repeatability 1.53 points mean absolute difference) predicted a market mean of 69.0 (95% CI 68.0–69.9). The number was bad enough that we ran the full census rather than publish an estimate. The census answered 69.4. Three errors were caught by our own verification chain before publication — a keyword-based taxonomy replaced by model classification, an extraction bug that counted unmeasurable checks as failures, and a mis-attribution during live-site hand-verification — and all three corrections are documented in the report.

Read this first. This study was produced by Mass Tort Ad Agency using a scoring engine we built — we are an interested party, so discount us and check the published method instead. Our own homepage scores 93 on this engine; because our site is tuned against criteria we chose, we exclude ourselves from every table. One measured firm, Lerner & Rowe, shares a co-owner with a separate MTAA-affiliated business; its score received no special treatment in either direction. The author is not an attorney; nothing here is legal advice, and no statement in this study asserts that any firm has violated any rule of professional conduct.
